The History and Future of the BARRAGE

PokemonGO is just one of the examples of how augmented reality is currently being used.

Since its development, augmented reality has swept the market and is now available in the palm of your hands with mobile games such as Pokemon GO. But now that augmented reality is becoming more popular and is being used in different ways, where did it start and where is this technology heading? How can the BARRIAGE change how people interact with this groundbreaking technology?

The History of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality

The first augmented reality device was invented in 1968 by Ivan Sutherland, a professor at Harvard University, and his student Bob Sproull. Titled “the Sword of Damocles,” the device was hung from the ceiling and attached to the head. When used, the user would experience computer graphics and would experience “an alternate reality.” But it wasn’t until 1990 that a Boeing researcher named Tom Caudell coined the term “Augmented Reality”. Now, augmented reality is being used for entertainment, such as video games; medical student training; shopping experiences, such as at the Harley Davidson customization center; and in airports.

While the term “virtual reality” was coined in the mid-1980s by the founder of VPL Research, Jaron Lanier, the technology we use today was actually founded in the 1800s with basic photography equipment. The first virtual reality machine was introduced as the stereoscope, which used two mirrors to project a single image. This machine was patented as the View-Master in 1939 and is still being produced. But today’s virtual reality equipment was designed at the NASA Ames Research Center in the mid-1980s and uses a head-mounted device with gloves to enable interaction. Virtual reality is all around us. Virtual reality is being used in the gaming industry, job training, at events and trade shows, for information overlays in science labs, for exposure therapy, and during medical student training.

These days, augmented reality, virtual reality, and interactive technology allows users to experience a virtual world without the pressures of real life.

From Video Games to Assistive Technology

Unlike other pieces of technology on the market, the BARRAGE uses technology to enhance virtual and augmented reality software. Our patented technology is an interactive video game system designed to make any game a reality. This core product is one of the only products on the market of its kind that can be used with video games, PC gaming, movie experiences with streaming and blu-ray/DVD devices, and with or without virtual reality. The BARRAGE allows gamers and technology-enthusiasts to immerse themselves in augmented reality with tactile feedback. The BARRAGE allows users to feel what is going on around them in the digital world with hot and cold sensors as well as vibration sensors. Don’t miss a second of your virtual or augmented experience.
